Comparisons
White oak is the most popular hardwood in America right now. Brazilian hardwoods offer more hardness and more color for the money. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.
White oak measures about 1360 on the Janka hardness scale. That is a solid, respectable floor. Brazilian species go much further: Tauari at 1460, Jatobá at 2820, Cumaru at 3540 and Ipê at 3680. If you have kids, pets, or heavy traffic, that extra hardness translates directly into fewer dents and scratches over the years.
White oak is loved for its neutral, slightly cool tone that takes stain well. Brazilian hardwoods bring natural color with no stain required, from the pale, oak like tone of Tauari to the rich reds of Jatobá and the deep browns of Ipê. If you want the light modern look, note that Tauari (Brazilian Oak) delivers it with greater hardness than white oak.
Both perform well when properly installed and acclimated. Denser Brazilian species can be slightly more sensitive to humidity swings, which is one reason our premium options come in engineered construction for demanding environments.
Premium white oak has climbed in price as demand has surged. Brazilian hardwoods frequently offer more hardness and more visual richness at a comparable or better price, especially when you buy factory direct. You get a harder, more distinctive floor for your budget.
| White Oak | Brazilian Hardwood | |
|---|---|---|
| Janka hardness | ~1360 | 1460 to 3680 |
| Natural color | Neutral, needs stain for depth | Rich color, no stain needed |
| Look | Light, modern, classic | Light to deep, distinctive |
| Value | Premium priced | More hardness per dollar |
Choose a Brazilian hardwood when you want maximum durability, natural color without staining, and a floor that stands apart. If your heart is set on the pale oak aesthetic, Tauari gives you that exact look with a tougher surface. If you love deep, warm tones, nothing matches Jatobá or Cumaru.
